Michael Varadian


Michael S. Varadian, JD, MBA, has over thirty years of senior leadership experience in public and private sector health care and behavioral health operations, development, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), managed care, integrated care, health reform, regulations, policy, and health law.

Previously, Mr. Varadian was the Senior Vice President and National Director of Health Reform at Providence Service Corporation, leading this multi-billion dollar international behavioral health managed care company to design and implement integrated and collaborative care initiatives, partnering with payers, employers, academic medical centers and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), throughout Providence’s home and community based operations in 31 states. He is a leading national resource and frequent speaker on Health Homes, integrated care, Medicaid managed care, addiction, and health and payment reform.

Prior to Providence Service Corporation, Mr. Varadian was the Executive Director for Operations and Policy for the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. There he led all department efforts in Medicaid health reform, integrated care and workforce development, implementing the nation’s first CMS Health Home Pilot for seriously mentally ill individuals, and the nation’s second Opiate Treatment Program Health Home for the opiate dependent population. Both programs have been considered national models for all other states.

During his time in Rhode Island, Mr. Varadian was also the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, where he headed up all health care regulations, health plan certification and licensing, professional credentialing and disciplinary Boards, Certificate of Need program, health and safety inspections, as well as statewide regulations and oversight of all vital environmental areas including food safety, drinking water quality, beach water quality and radiation monitoring for all health care facilities and professionals.

Mr. Varadian has also led a national behavioral health outcomes company- Behavioral Health Laboratories; a national behavioral health managed care company- First Health Services; a Massachusetts community teaching hospital- Newton Wellesley Hospital; national health care consulting companies- Advocates for Human Potential, and Focus Advisors; and performed health care mergers and acquisitions for American Medical International (now Tenet), and for the Boston law firm, Warner & Stackpole.

He earned his Bachelors of Science degree at Babson College, in Wellesley, MA, his Masters of Business Administration degree at the George Washington University in Washington, DC, and his Juris Doctor degree at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, MA, and is a member of the Bar in Massachusetts and at the United States Supreme Court.
